Recent discussions of regroupment and reorganisation of the left in Britain have been welcome to see. Whatever critique we may have of these processes, what is more striking when attending events on left regroupment is the current inadequate level of understanding of questions of organisation and strategy amongst contributors. We have not even begun clarifying what we might mean by the ‘party’. There is a need, recognised by many, to raise the level of discussion, clarify what we each mean, and begin the process of some meaningful regroupment.
As such, the editorial board of Prometheus are opening a call for articles written by people active across the left in Britain on the question:
What do you mean by the party?
What are the purposes of such an organisation? What are the functions it needs to cover? And how might it come about?
By canvassing written contributions from already active collectives and other interested figures, we hope to begin a process where people across the left put forward their understandings and the general level of understanding can be raised.
Articles would be published on the Prometheus site (welcome to cross-post on other sites), with the aspiration to potentially put together a collection on Partyism at this key moment for the left in Britain.
Thanks to those who have submitted or indicated they wish to submit for the first tranche of articles. They will be released periodically over the Winter 2024-5 period.
We’re planning to treat this as an ongoing series, so if you’d still like to contribute or respond to a piece – email to indicate you wish to contribute or send a draft.
Recommended article size – 1000-5000 words (inc any bibliography and references etc)
Email editors@prometheusjournal.org to indicate you wish to contribute and ask any questions
You can always find our latest What Is the Party? articles here.
